Iron ore resources of South Africa

Mr Dave Reeves, Managing Director of Ferrex, said: “The on-time delivery of the first resource within eight months of joining AIM is a significant achievement for the company. The resource has exceeded 1.1km of the identified 14km BIF Malelane strike length calculations and highlight the size and grade potential of the deposit. We believe that the current JORC compliant resource should be able to support most of the first 20 years of mine life at an estimated production rate of 3 Mtpa. The large potential of DSO in this resource is also of particular interest Of interest, we will target higher-grade areas in an upcoming drilling campaign scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2012, which is primarily aimed at upgrading resources to designated categories.

South Africa, rich in iron ore, is the largest country with iron ore reserves in Africa. Iron as the main raw material for ferrous metallurgy is widely used in all sectors of the national economy and people’s daily lives.

Iron ore resources of South Africa

South Africa, which has the world’s seventh largest iron ore reserves, has the largest iron ore reserves in Africa with over 2 billion tons, mostly of hard hematite.

South Africa is an important exporter of lump ore in the world with a high level of extraction of rich and lump iron ores. Lump ore from South Africa, known for its high iron content (66%), low impurities, and good physical and metallurgical properties, is an excellent raw material for direct loading into blast furnaces.

South African fine ore with high iron content (65%) and coarser grains can be mixed with fine concentrate. In addition, due to the characteristics of low water content (less than 2%) and frost resistance, it is suitable for use in cold regions.

Use of iron ore
Iron ore is mainly used for the smelting of pig iron (usually with more than 2% carbon) and steel (with less than 2% carbon) for the iron and steel industry.

The steel industry is one of South Africa’s main industries, accounting for 16% of its GDP. Iron and steel smelting and steel production employs 190,000 people.

Use of iron ore

Use of iron ore, including steel production, iron smelting, etc.

The raw steel after rolling is used to make various end steels, mainly rebar, wire rod, hot-rolled coils (HRC), pipes, etc.

Long products such as rebar and wire are used in the construction industry. Rebar is mainly used in construction, bridge, highway, railway and other building structures. The wire is used as reinforcing and welding parts of structures, drawing materials, etc.

HRC and other flat products are widely used in the manufacture of ships, automobiles, bridges, buildings, machinery, pressure vessels and so on.

Pipes, such as seamless steel pipes and welded pipes, are mainly used for pipelines for transporting liquids or structural parts.

Mining industry

The mountain to be developed must be cleared of surface overburden, weathered layer, interlayer, host rocks and part of broken ore that has no mining value. The main mining processes are separation, segmentation and formation.
